DfT announces decision on transport grant and advice programmes

The Transport minister, Stephen Ladyman, has announced that the Government will not implement the Low Carbon Car, Low Carbon Bus, Air Quality Retrofit and Enhanced Environmental Vehicle grant programmes "on the grounds that, if implemented, they would not achieve market transformation or provide value for money."

The Department plans to refocus an equivalent amount of green transport investment into initiatives including a communications campaign on vehicle purchasing, eco-safe driving and workplace travel planning, expansion of the Freight Best Practice and Safe and Efficient Driving (SAFED) programmes, refocusing of existing business travel planning support and other measures including a best practice programme for bus operators and a green transport accreditation programme.

The detailed development of new and expanded programmes will be taken forward as part of the Government's review of the Powering Future Vehicles Strategy this year.

The existing Low Carbon R&D grant programme, Infrastructure grant programme and car fleet advice programme managed by the Energy Saving Trust (EST) will continue.
