Defra's new Shopper's Guide to Green Labels

Fri 20 January 2006 View all news

In an effort to help consumers understand what various green labels mean, Defra has launched a guide that explains the logos and labels commonly found on UK products.

The pocket-sized guide shows the environmental labels you are most likely to find on products from washing machines to coffee and cars to footballs; and explains what they mean.

Among the labels highlighted in the guide is the UK vehicle fuel economy label, new this autumn. It's a voluntary labelling scheme, agreed between the car industry and Government, which is starting to appear on all new cars.

It shows how much carbon dioxide the car emits, along with the estimated fuel costs and vehicle excise duty, showing that better environmental performance also means lower road tax and running costs.
