Daf to trial hybrid trucks in UK

Truck maker Daf is putting seven hybrid vehicles on trial with customers in the UK from early in 2008. Daf is on the lookout for urban operators interested in taking part in the trial.

Daf's UK managing director said the Daf XF 105 already meets the Environmentally Efficient Vehicle emission standards without any exhaust after-treatment and that an even more efficient version will be available next Spring.

These developments come against a background of increasing demand from haulage fleet owners to demonstrably cut their carbon footprints. In a 'straw poll' carried out amongst 170 delegates at the recent Fleet Van Conference and reported by the SMMT, fleet operators, almost without exception, said they wanted van makers to provide fuel economy and CO2 data along the lines of the figures now available for cars.

Daf is seeking urban operators who would be willing to take part in the trial with the expectation that the hybrid vehicles will be in production by late next year.

The truck division of French vehicle maker Renault also recently announced that it is working towards the introduction of hybrid technology in its truck fleet. Renault Trucks presented the Hybrys - which it describes as 'an innovatory, hybrid technology urban concept vehicle' - at the Road Transport Show in Amsterdam. (See related link)
