Coalition launches Biofuels Declaration to boost to biofuels

A coalition of UK companies and campaign groups, including British Sugar, Saab, Ford, Friends of the Earth, Transport2000 and the NFU have launched a campaign urging the Government to boost the British biofuels industry.

The group wants government backing to encourage the UK's capacity to manufacture bioethanol.

Bioethanol is produced from sugar or wheat. It can be mixed in limited quantities (up to 5%) with petrol without any need to alter petrol pumps.

The Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership recently published a report on the well-to-wheels carbon implications of different production routes for bioethanol. The report concluded that how the fuel is made and how its by-products are used strongly affects the energy and greenhouse gas balance of the final product.

The Bioethanol Declaration is supported by a large number of organisations including: Ford, Saab, the Transport and General Workers Union, Friends of the Earth, British Sugar, Renewables East, Regen SW, Dr Jeremy Woods, Bioethanol Ltd, Renewables East, North Energy Associates, the CLA, Roquette, Wessex Grain, the NFU and Transport 2000.
