General Motors, Daimler Chrysler and BMW have reported on progress in their jointly funded research project to develop new 'cutting-edge' hybrid technology.

The three manufacturers are reported to be spending $1bn to develop the new technology and increase competition for fuel-efficient cars.

The Dodge Durango is expected to be one of the models using the new technology.

The new "dual-mode" engine is intended to be adjustable in order to shift between optimum performance and fuel efficiency. It will include an on-board computer to decide when the engine should shift from gasoline to battery power.

About 500 engineers are reported to have been working for 18 months to develop improved hybrid transmission, and ways of integrating it into vehicles.
