Car buyers' interest in CO2 emissions increasing - HPI research report

Awareness of CO2 emissions figures by used car buyers is on the increase according to research published by used car data company HPI. HPI research shows that between 2007 and 2010 there was a 52 percent increase in the number of car dealers who say that the CO2 emissions of a model have influenced potential car buyers, and 93 percent say that shoppers want to know this information before they buy.

Daniel Burgess, Director of Automotive at HPI comments: "Our survey results show that car dealers are witnessing a change in car buyers’ attitudes towards making greener choices. Undoubtedly, rising fuel prices have accelerated the growing interest in buying 'green', with a 54 percent increase in consumer awareness of lower tax bands and a 29 percent increase in a focus on reducing motoring costs, compared to three years ago."

The LowCVP launched a Used Car Fuel Economy Label in late-2009, based on the successful New Car Label. In the first year about 1,300 dealers displayed the colour-coded information on least a third of a million used cars. (See associated link for more information.) HPI collaborated in the initiative, providing labels free of charge via HPI Check.

The research says that many dealers are downloading HPI's CO2 certificate in order to meet consumer interest.
