Ensus, a British biofuels company, plans to build a 400m litres/year bioethanol plant at the Wilton petrochemicals site in NE England. The news came as the Government released figures showing a five-fold increase in UK biofuels sales in 2005.

The Ensus plant is expected to start production by the end of 2008, with construction due to start in mid-2007.

Ensus says that it has entered long-term contracts with Shell to purchase all bioethanol produced at the plant. A Swiss company, Glencore, will supply the wheat feedstock.

Ensus has already secured more than £150m in debt to finance the project and expects to have the finance arrangements completed by the year-end.

Meanwhile, EDIE reports Government figures showing that UK biofuels sales grew five-fold between 2004 and 2005.

According to the report, the land area taken up by non-food crops - including biofuels, or products like natural pharmaceuticals and renewable construction materials - increased 75% between 2003 and 2005.
