Olympics sponsor BMW has revealed plans for a fleet of up to 4,000 low emission BMW and MINI vehicles, including electric and hybrid powered cars to be used by London 2012 Olympic organizers in the run-up to and during the Games. A total of 400 BMW bicycles will also be used.

The BMW 320d EfficientDynamics Saloon will make up about a third of the Olympic fleet, with combined cycle fuel efficiency of 68.9mpg and a CO2 figure of 109g/km. A new model, the BMW 520d EfficientDynamics Saloon with CO2 emissions of 119g/km will also feature significantly in the 2012 fleet. There will also be 200 electric-powered MINI and electric BMW 1 Series . The first BMW hybrid cars will also be debuted, while an electrically-assisted bicycle, the Pedelec, will make its first public appearance in the Olympic and Paralympic fleet.

Ian Robertston of BMW said: 'The majority of the fleet will be made up of highly efficient diesel-powered cars. This has allowed us to meet LOCOG's extremely challenging target of 120g/km of CO2, as an average across the fleet.’

From 2013, the German group will launch a new hybrid and electric model as part of its new BMW i sub-brand devoted to sustainability.
