Biofuels Directive - UK supply and quality assurance emerge as key issues

The Fuels Working Group expressed its views on the implementation of Biofuels Directive 2003/30/EC in the UK in paper adopted on 5th March.

Prior to the Government’s forthcoming consultation the Fuels Working Group highlighted that the UK could not meet the EU indicative target for 2005 of substituting 2% (by energy content) of petrol and diesel with biofuels without significant imports. Before setting a 2010 UK biofuels target, a majority called for an early assessment of the best ways of using biomass, the economic and environmental implications of such a target and UK engagement in international discussions on trading and establishing a sustainable bioenergy sector. The Group agreed that fuel quality maintenance and control to agreed European standards was paramount to ensure trouble-free use of biofuels and continued customer confidence in both the fuels and vehicles.

The Government is expected to launch its consultation on the implementation of the Biofuels Directive 2003/30/EC shortly.
