Shriti Vadera, the Business Minister, has announced a new investigation into the UK's automotive industry which aims to identify measures to tackle the challenges of low cost competition and the move to lower-carbon transport. The review will be conducted by a new Automotive Innovation and Growth Team (NAIGT) to be chaired by Richard Parry-Jones, a former Ford vice-president.

The NAIGT will consist of 10 members from within and outside the automotive industry. It aims to produce an industry action plan to be agreed with Government by March 2009.

In a report on the announcement in the Financial Times, Mr Parry-Jones said that the team will make recommendations on how "all levers of government, both regulatory and fiscal" can be mobilised.  Ms Vadera said: "We need to ensure our car industry can build on its existing strengths and remain competitive in an increasingly globalised world" .

The team will consider the recommendations made in the final report of the King Review, published in March alongside the 2008/9 UK Budget, as well as a BERR study on the environment undertaken for Japanese automotive supply companies in the UK, aimed at improving the UK's supply chain capabilities.

The earlier Automotive Innovation and Growth Team (AIGT) formed by the then Department of Trade and Industry was chaired by Sir Ian Gibson.  Its findings were published in 2002 and gave rise to the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership and Cenex - the Centre of Excellence for Low Carbon and Fuel Cells Technologies.
