Axon Automotive has received a £2 million grant from the Technology Strategy Board (TSB) in order to help the company develop green technology for car fleets. Together with further cash from Cambridgshire-based technology development and incubation company, The Technology Partnership (TTP), Axon hopes to produce a lightweight city car capable running 100-miles-per-gallon.

Axon has developed the city car which uses existing engine technology and carbon fibre material advances, to bring safe, economical and affordable vehicles to market quickly.  Dr Steven Cousins, founder and MD of Axon Automotive and member of the LowCVP Innovation Working Group, said: "Right now I take this as a terrific vote of confidence in the British automotive industry, given the difficulties worldwide. Axon has a 2011 target for production vehicles and we're really looking forward to getting on with the job - getting the next generation of automotive technologies ready for the up-turn."

Its light weight allows the Axon to achieve acceptable performance with a small .5L engine.
