Average CO2 emissions from new cars sold in the UK in 2006 fell by 1.3% compared with 2005 - to 167.2g/km - according to headline figures just released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

The 2006 fall compares with a drop of 1.2% the previous year, and 0.4% between 2003 and 2004. The cut in average new car CO2 emissions between 1997 and 2006 was 11.9%.

The European car industry as a whole has signed a voluntary commitment to reach a fleet average for CO2 emissions from new cars of 140g/km by 2008.

The latest headline figures released by the SMMT show that average carbon reductions were significantly higher for cars sold to private users than those sold to fleets.

The SMMT will be publishing a more detailed report on UK cars and CO2 in the Spring.
