Analysts report 3.4% fall in EU new car CO2 in 2011 vs 2010

Jato Dynamics, the automotive sector analysts, has reported a 3.4% fall in average European new car CO2 emissions to 136.1g CO2/km in 2011. The firm's preliminary data indicates that 30% of new cars sold are emitting 120g CO2/km or less.
Fiat leads the top selling volume brands with an average CO2 level of 118.2 g/km, while SEAT has moved into second place with an average level of 125.2 g/km in 2011 followed by Citroen and Toyota. In national terms Portugal continued to have the lowest emissions at 112gCO2/km, followed by the Netherlands, which introduced new CO2-linked tax rules last year.
EU carmakers have a target set by the European Commission to to cut emissions from the new car fleet to below 130gCO2/km by 2015, a figured criticised by environmental groups who argue that the 95g CO2/km slated for 2020 should be brought forward. Official EU figures showed a 3.7% drop in 2010 and a 5.1% drop in 2009.
The findings are published ahead of the launch of JATO’s latest report – A Review of CO2 New Car Emissions across Europe 2011 – which covers 21 European markets and shows that eight manufacturer brands have already achieved the 130 g/km European target set for 2015. This is due for release by the end of March.
