Amazon, the international e-commerce company, has announced that 160 electric heavy goods vehicles are joining its fleet in the biggest ever UK eHGV order. The company is also adding 800 new electric vans across the UK and extending pedestrian and e-bike deliveries.

The Mercedes-Benz e-Actros 600 trucks will transport products between Amazon logistics hubs across the UK and will travel the equivalent of 70,000 miles a year each, on average. With a range of more than 310 miles (500km) when fully charged, the trucks can transport up to a 22-tonne load per journey.

The 40-tonne electric trucks, operated by Amazon's carrier partners, are part of a record-breaking order made earlier this year, with a small number part-funded through Amazon's participation in the UK Government's Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator (ZEHID) programme.

To support their electric fleet, Amazon has installed fast charging points at its UK sites, with 360kW chargers that can charge the trucks from 20-80% battery capacity in just over an hour.

Nicola Fyfe, EU VP of Amazon Logistics said: “The first vehicles from our record-breaking eHGV order are now on Britain's roads, transporting products between our hubs. This marks a major milestone in our journey to decarbonise our UK transportation network.

“The challenge to scaling this approach across the logistics industry, however, is charging infrastructure.

“We've invested in our own facilities but need continued industry and Government collaboration to develop the national network required for widespread electric vehicle adoption.”

Amazon is also investing in 800-plus new Mercedes-Benz e-Sprinter electric vans to be deployed for Amazon deliveries.

The company says that it is also expanding its on-foot courier services in four London boroughs, as well as operating electric cargo bikes across multiple UK cities, including Manchester, London, and Glasgow.
