As part of the 2021 Transport Decarbonisation Plan, the Department for Transport (DfT) committed to working with industry stakeholders to “explore potential measures to remove existing market barriers for higher biocontent fuel (HBF) use in certain compatible vehicles”. The Department is keen to explore solutions to unlock these barriers and to increase uptake of higher biocontent fuels such as higher blend biodiesel (B20/30) and HVO.

The DfT has commissioned a ‘Higher Biocontent Fuel Deployment Research Study’ to better understand how UK and international fleet operators have successfully deployed higher biocontent fuels, explore UK market barriers and identify a range of interventions that could help increase adoption rates amongst HGV fleet operators.

Zemo Partnership, Low Carbon Truck Consultancy and WSP are assisting the DfT in the delivery of this project. Our dedicated team comprises of industry specialists who have extensive operational experience of managing HGV fleets, influencing low carbon transport policy, engaging with the UK renewable fuels market and vehicle design & manufacture and delivery of real-world logistics operations.

We are reaching out to a range of different types of fleet operators (large/small, UK/International, those using HBF/those who aren’t) who operate vehicles across a variety of different duty cycles to provide a well-rounded viewpoint. We plan to hold workshops with fleet operators in March that will:

  1. Explore current market barriers in relation of higher blend biodiesel and renewable diesel/HVO and how these might vary between different types of fleet operators.
  2. Discuss how different measures that Government and industry could introduce could encourage wider adoption rates in large and small HGV fleets.

The workshops will be hosted online (via Teams) on Thursday 14th March, 10am to 11.30am and Wednesday 20th March, 2pm to 3.30pm.
