We have invested resource in developing our technology roadmap which is focused on ensuring that the industry is exploiting technology as it becomes operationally mature, to drive reductions in fuel, emissions and cost of ownership. This includes gaining a meaningful understanding of the operational readiness of technologies through close liaison and working with suppliers and manufactures.
We have developed a detailed understanding of real life duty cycles across UK and developed a representative test cycle at Millbrook in order that we can work with manufactures to test and develop systems with technical rigor. This includes improving data integrity through the use of Portable Emissions Measurement Systems (PEMS) to enable accurate ‘like for like’ comparisons of technologies on realistic duty cycles. This gives us a robust means of understanding carbon emissions to drive our procurement decisions for new vehicles. For example, our methodologies and work has been recognised by WrightBus as being instrumental in them developing the Streetlite to gain Low Carbon Certification and we work equally with other manufactures on low carbon initiatives.
We have electrification projects to deliver low emissions and no emissions vehicles to meet the needs of Local Authorities. Additionally, we are maintaining a technology watch on alternative fuels. For example, we are in partnership in the Aberdeen City Council-led Aberdeen Hydrogen Project introducing hydrogen fuel cell powered buses.
