Achieving the Government’s 2050 net zero carbon target requires the UK to take deep cuts in road transport greenhouse gas emissions over the next two decades. The advancement of zero tail-pipe emission vehicles and low carbon fuels has a critical role to play in reducing vehicle GHG emissions. However, to deliver on these decarbonisation ambitions measures are required by policy makers and the automotive industry to address GHG emission across the vehicle lifecycle, taking into account vehicle production, in-use (WTW) and end of life stages. This could offer the UK new opportunities for delivering a low carbon economy and demonstrating international leadership in GHG emission mitigation.

The Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership and Advanced Propulsion Centre are holding a workshop on Thursday 28th November to explore how life cycle CO2e assessment can be better integrated into automotive manufacturing and future vehicle policy.

The Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership and Advanced Prolusion Centre are holding a workshop on Thursday 28th November to explore how life cycle CO2e assessment can be better integrated into automotive manufacturing and future vehicle policy.

The workshop will take place with a morning seminar session from 10am followed by an afternoon workshop for invited participants until 4pm at the IMechE, One Birdcage Walk, London SW1H 9JJ.

Speakers will include: LowCVP, Ricardo, E4tech, The Carbon Trust and JLR.

Overarching Aims of the Workshop

  1. To explore how lifecycle CO2e assessment can be better embedded across UK automotive industry and become integrated account in low carbon vehicle policy.

  2. To identify priorities for LowCVP and APC work over the next few years to lead and shape this agenda.

Objectives

  1. To provide an overview of current use of life cycle  CO2e emission assessment by the automotive industry and its benefits.

  2. To demonstrate current life cycle CO2e metrics for different vehicle types and powertrains, and how this could change in the long-term.

  3. To explore different options for encouraging wider adoption to LCA, identifying key enablers and priorities for making this happen.

  4. To understand what barriers and opportunities exist for the automotive industry for adopting LCA, to identify risks of ignoring LCA.

  5. Begin to define a standard assessment process for LCA to formulate into Government’s Value for Money project calculations - ‘manufacture’, ‘transportation,’ ‘usage’ and ‘disposal’.

The final agenda will be circulated in the next few weeks.
