Westport is a Vancouver Headquartered company which specialises in engineering solutions to enable the application of alternative fuels in engines. One such technology is the HPDI system which was invented and patented by Westport's Engineers in Vancouver. This technology enables Natural gas (or other gas fuels) to be direct injected into the combustion chamber of a high compression engine and thereby retain the high combustion efficiency and performance of a diesel engine. HPDI is a technology that is unique to Westport.
In order to bring the HPDI concept to a product that is manufacturable to sufficient consistency, quality and in volume, Westport partnered with Delphi UK. A significant proportion of the HPDI 2.0 injector was designed and developed by Engineers at Delphi Stonehouse where many years of experience and know how in the design of heavy duty diesel injectors could be transferred over to the HPDI 2.0 injector. HPDI 2.0 has been in production at Stonehouse since early 2019 and forms the core element of the fuel system adopted by Volvo for their FH and FX LNG trucks. These EU6 vehicles are certified to achieve a 20% reduction in CO2 by comparison with their diesel equivalents at the same performance level. Furthermore, by fueling with biofuels, these vehicles can also offer net zero (or even negative) GHG impact.
Going forward, Westport is keen to make further developments of the HPDI product at Stonehouse to suit more applications. and achieve even greater efficiency. Also to work with fuel suppliers and truck operators to maximise the GHG opportunities that there are to be had through the use of alternative fuels such as Natural gas, Biomethane, Hydrogen and other fuels.
