2020 was record year as BEVs achieve 6.6% of UK new car sales
Despite the pandemic and a near-30% fall in UK car sales in 2020, battery electric vehicles achieved a record 6.6% of all sales. Combined with plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), more than one-in-ten vehicles sold in the UK in 2020 can be recharged with a plug according to data recently published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

McKinsey projects fossil fuel demand will peak by 2029 - ahead of earlier scenarios
McKinsey - one of the world's largest consultancies - says global fossil fuel demand is set to peak by 2029. The company's Global Energy Perspective 2021 report says that the impacts of Covid-19 have permanently shifted energy demand curves and that although demand will likely rebound to 2019 levels by 2023, it will not return to its previous growth path and is likely to reach a global peak before 2030.

Nissan commits to UK production; sets 2050 carbon neutrality target
Nissan has announced that it is setting a global goal for the company to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. It says that by the early 2030s, every all-new Nissan vehicle sold in key markets will be electrified. Meanwhile, reports say that the company has committed to continue manufacturing cars in the UK for the long-term as a result of the trade deal agreed between the EU and UK last December.

Ovo Energy unveils smart tariff for EVs to cut costs, help balance grid
Ovo Energy has announced a new flat fee (6p/kWh) energy tariff, exclusively available to EV users at any time of the day, powered by innovative technology from Kaluza which enables the vehicle to draw power at times when electricity is cheapest. Ovo says that the deal could cut charging costs by as much as 63 percent and also help to balance the electricity grid by reducing demand at peak times, while also cutting the need to invest in new power generation.

European truck makers promise to phase out IC-engines by 2040
A group of Europe's leading truck manufacturers have promised that they will stop selling vehicles driven by internal combusion engines by 2040. Chief executives of Daimler, Scania, MAN, Volvo, DAF, IVECO and Ford have signed a pledge to phase-out combustion engines and focus on hydrogen, battery technology and “clean fuels.”

LowCVP inviting new Board member nominations as it enters next phase of the drive for zero - Deadline extended!
LowCVP is inviting nominations for senior stakeholders to stand for election to the Partnership's Board of Directors. New Board members will join at a critical phase as the Partnership repositions itself to support the increased pace of transport decarbonisation, after the UK commitment to Net Zero by 2050 and as we approach the publicatieen on of the Government's Transport Decarbonisation Plan next Spring. The deadline for nominations has been extended until 15 Feb.

Net Zero Week 14-20 June - 14/06/2021
Net Zero Week will be a national awareness week; a focal point for generating awareness and momentum for businesses and consumers starting the journey to decarbonise, acting as an information hub for those already on their way. It will be an annual event, this year taking place four months before the UK hosts the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in November 2021 Glasgow.
