Government sets 2030/5 phase-out for ICE cars and vans in Ten Point Plan for environment

The announcement was part of a 'Ten Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution' which also includes proposals for low carbon hydrogen, low emission freight, sustainable aviation, green ships, public transport and active travel, all backed up by green finance and innovation.

The rapid increase in the public sector deficit as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic are another potential driver for the policy change. However, proposals did not appear in the Spending Review, perhaps as a result of adverse media coverage in advance of the announcement.
