11,000 international scientists call for urgent and immediate action to tackle 'climate crisis'


An international grouping of 11,000 scientists has warned that humanity faces "untold suffering due to the climate crisis" unless urgent and effective action is taken. Meanwhile, the WMO has reported that greenhouse gas emissions hit record levels in 2018, in the latest figures just released.

New report says UK must embrace digital opportunities or risk missing out on green transport revolution

A rapid roll out of new digital technologies, like integrated mobility apps and remote diagnostics, is critical if the UK is to capitalise on the growing low carbon transport market, according to a new report by Green Alliance. The 'think tank' says that failing to adopt smart clean transport will also undermine the UK’s efforts to reach the goal of net zero by 2050. 


T&E publishes 'Blueprint for battery regulations in Europe' Brussels-based NGO, Transport & Environment, has published a 'Blueprint for battery regulations in Europe' which discusses the key areas to be addressed to ensure battery sustainability and the lowest life cycle impacts. Meanwhile, a Birmingham University study, published in Nature focuses on the recycling of lithium-ion batteries in the UK. Read more

IEA analysis shows growth in bigger and heavier cars a major factor in CO2 emissions increase

A commentary from the International Energy Agency (IEA) linked to the publication of the latest World Energy Outlook, highlights the growth - across all the main international car markets - in the size of vehicles chosen by car buyers since around 2010. The IEA says that Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) were the second-largest contributor to growth in greenhouse gas emissions from 2010 to 2018, emitting over 700 million tonnes of carbon-dioxide over the last decade. 


Results of two-year trial of the use of biomethane in heavy trucks published

The results of the Dedicated to Gas project, deploying 20 Euro VI vehicles running on biomethane have been published. The report says that the project saved over 1,400 tonnes of well-to-wheel CO2e emissions compared to diesel in a two-year trial. The tests showed that the vehicles emitted similar low levels of NOx as their Euro VI diesel counterparts.


Policy Developments

Bristol City Council agrees city centre diesel car ban In its efforts to tackle poor air quality, Bristol City Council has agreed to ban privately owned cars from a central zone during the daytime while commercial vehicles will be charged for entering the zone. The plan means that Bristol will become the UK's first city to ban diesel cars from certain parts of the city in an attempt to cut air pollution and meet legal air quality targets. Read more

LowCVP to host series of zero emission vehicle workshops beginning with events in Perth, Reading

LowCVP will be hosting a series of Zero Emission Fleets workshops in the coming months, focusing on different vehicle sectors. An event in Perth on December 4 will cover commercial fleets while a second, in Reading on December 5, will focus on buses.


Route to Tomorrow's Journeys - Micromobility Regulations

The LowCVP is working in association with the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA), to develop the PLV market and to begin the discussion around the prospects for micromobility vehicles in the UK. Care will be needed to appropriately regulate this emerging mode of transport, to ensure the safety of riders, pedestrians and other road users.
