DfT announces UK's first transport decarbonisation plan


The Government has announced plans for the full decarbonisation of the transport sector by 2050. The announcement follows four months after the UK legislated for net zero emissions by 2050 and is published as a formal response to the latest progress report from the Committee on Climate Change.

Government consults on introduction of 'green' number plates The Government has launched a consultation about introducing green number plates "to celebrate and encourage uptake of electric vehicles". The consultation will run until 14 January 2020. Read more

Mayor announces £25m polluting scrappage scheme for older cars as ULEZ reports positive start

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan has announced a £25m ‘scrap for cash’ dirty vehicle scheme focused on older, dirty vehicles and specifically for low-income and disabled Londoners. The Mayor says that the scrappage scheme aims to help Londoners ahead of the Ultra Low Emission Zone expansion in 2021 up to the North and South Circular roads.


Labour welcomes energy experts plan to fast-track decarbonisation of energy and transport systems

The Labour Party has welcomed a fast-track plan from a group of independent energy industry experts that the Party charged with identifying the most radical feasible pathway to decarbonise the energy system by 2030. If elected, the Party says it aims to create a carbon-neutral energy system by the 2030s including insulation upgrades for every home in the UK and enough new solar panels to cover 22,000 football pitches.

Whether autonomous cars are good for environment depends on policy choices - report A new report from Brussels-based NGO Transport and Environment says that the unregulated arrival of driverless cars could increase traffic in Europe's cities by 50% to 150% by 2050. The headline findings echo those of a LowCVP analysis ('Automated Vehicles: Automatically Low Carbon?') which was published in 2016. Read more

LowCVP calls for clarity and consistency on EV running costs – key to unlocking cleaner vehicle market

New research by the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership (LowCVP) finds that better understanding of the running costs and total costs of vehicle ownership on the part of private car buyers could significantly boost the market for cleaner, low carbon vehicles. The work was carried out as part of a collaboration with the finance and leasing sector to highlight potential savings.

LowCVP gives evidence to Welsh Assembly on transport decarbonisation LowCVP has given evidence to the Economy, Infrastructure and Skills Committee of the National Assembly of Wales, focusing on transport decarbonisation. LowCVP's Managing Director, Andy Eastlake, gave evidence to the Committee on October 23, advising the Committee on raising the trajectory of transport decarbonisation from 80% prescribed by the Climate Change Act to the new net zero target.  Read more

LowCVP and APC exploring how life cycle CO2e assessment can be integrated into production decisions

The LowCVP and the Advanced Propulsion Centre are working together to develop tools to help ensure that the full life cycle CO2-equivalent emissions impacts are taken into account in decisions about vehicle design and production. A life cycle greenhouse gas emissions tool has been developed to examine how impacts vary across vehicle segments. The partners are holding a workshop (members only) on 28 November and are inviting feedback to a stakeholder survey on the issue.
