MPs Committee says achieving clean growth may not be compatible with personal vehicle ownership


Amongst the recommendations of the Science and Technology Committee's report on the technologies needed to achieve clean growth are that the Government must end the fuel duty freeze, reconsider fiscal incentives for cleaner vehicles and bring forward the ending of sales of new 'conventional' cars and vans to 2035 at the latest.

Policy Developments

New transport minister to take charge of decarbonisation and environment The LowCVP has written a letter to welcome new minister, George Freeman MP, who will lead on 'decarbonisation and environment' as well as transport technology and innovation and OLEV amongst other responsibilities. Baroness Vere of Norbiton takes on responsibility for freight, buses and taxis as part of the new Boris Johnson Government. The details of ministerial responsibilities were announced in August following the appointments in July. Read more
Government announces additional funding for on-street residential chargepoints The Government has announced an additional £2.5 million to fund the installation of over 1,000 new residential chargepoints. It will support the on-street residential chargepoint scheme, launched in 2017, which helps people access charging infrastructure near their homes when they don’t have off-street parking. Read more

Latest figures show renewable fuels are 4% of all road fuel supplied in UK

According to the latest Department for Transport statistics, over 800 million litres - around 4% of the total - of renewable fuel has been supplied to the UK market for road and non-road mobile machinery so far this year.

New report outlines role of HGVs in future energy system A new report from the Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) says that the transition to zero emissions in the HGV sector may require hybrid vehicles. Read more

LowCVP to partner in 'Government Pavilion' at Cenex-LCV2019 The LowCVP will again be collaborating with six other agencies in the government-associated 'innovation support ecosystem' at the Cenex-LCV 2019 event, which takes place at Millbrook Proving Ground on 4-5 September 2019. The 'UK Government Pavilion' at the event has been established to help visitors understand what support is available to them in terms of the drive for innovation on the Road to Zero. Read more
EV Energy Taskforce stakeholder engagement workshops 9 & 13 Sept The Electric Vehicle Energy Taskforce (EVET) is holding a series of regional stakeholder engagement workshops including upcoming events in Glasgow (9 Sept) and London (13 Sept). EVET, which is facilitated by the LowCVP, has been formed at the request of the Government to help ensure that the UK's energy system is ready for and able to facilitate and exploit the mass take up of electric vehicles. LowCVP 2019 Conference focuses on future fuels - all resources now available

The Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership’s 16th Annual Conference, took place in Westminster on July 8. ‘More than electric dreams? Future Fuels on the Road to Zero' asked whether accelerating the drive to battery electric vehicles can deliver road transport’s contribution to ‘net zero’ or whether we’ll need to use ‘other tools in the box’ to cut emissions from liquid fuels and combustion engines while we’re undergoing the electric transition. Conference presentations, videos, images and other resources are now available from a dedicated page on the LowCVP's website.

The LowCVP is seeking to recruit a new Technical & Programme Director. This is a senior role requiring an accomplished people and project manager, commercially astute who can create collaboration and engagement both internally and externally with partner organisations and institutions in both the private and public sectors.

'Schools Strike' activist Greta Thunberg arrives in New York after 15-day journey on solar-powered yacht The 16-year-old Swedish climate change activist who founded the 'Schools Strike' movement, Greta Thunberg, has arrived for a climate conference after a 15-day, 3,000 mile voyage across the Atlantic on a zero emissions yacht, powered by wind and solar power.  Read more
