Prime Minister announces that UK will host Zero Emission Vehicle Summit in Autumn 2018

The Prime Minister, Theresa May, has announced that the UK will host a global Zero Emission Vehicle Summit in the Autumn of next year. The aim of the summit is to "cement the UK’s position as a world leader in the low emission and electric vehicle industry". The Summit promise was made alongside other announcements by the Prime Minister to tackle climate change and its impacts, including £140m of new funding to help the world's poorest communities address the effects of climate change.

US studies suggest climate change progressing faster and with greater severity than thought

A study published by a leading US scientific institution suggest that current predictions of climate change may be too optimistic. The study, by the Carnegie Institution for Science in California says that there is a 93 per cent chance that warming may exceed 4C by the end of the century. Past studies have estimated the likelihood of a 4C rise occurring at 62 per cent.

Bioethanol plant to remain closed until future for fuel is clearer says Vivergo

The operators of a bioethanol plant in Hull which employs 150 workers says it will 'closely monitor the market' before considering reopening the plant. Vivergo, which is owned by Associated British Foods, said it had stopped operating the plant because of uncertainty around biofuels policy and future demand for the fuel.


Ban on BMW electric car ad over misleading environmental claims

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned an advert for an electric BMW car saying it made misleading environmental claims.  The advertisement for the BMW i3 (which is available as both a pure battery version or with a petrol range extender) appeared in a Facebook advertisement which has been censured by the UK’s advertising watchdog for claiming the electric car, was “clean” and “zero emissions”, in a ruling that could have a knock-on effect on other electric car advertising.

Battery electric vehicles now close to total ownership cost parity with ICE vehicles say researchers

A new study by researchers at the University of Leeds finds that financial subsidies have enabled battery electric vehicles to reach cost parity with conventional ICE vehicles in terms of Total Cost of Ownership in the UK as well as in parts of the USA and Japan.


Mitsubishi Outlander hybrid leads UK plug-in league table, ahead of Nissan Leaf

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle) is the most common plug-in car on the UK's roads, ahead of the pure battery-electric Nissan Leaf according to analysis by the RAC Foundation, based on DVLA data.
