Government announces 2040 end to conventional petrol & diesel car sales in response to emissions challenge

In its latest, revised UK Air Quality Plan for tackling roadside NO2, the Government has announced that sales of conventional petrol and diesel cars and vans will end in 2040 and has reaffirmed the aim that almost every car and van on the road in 2050 will be zero emission.  In a bid to tackle air pollution in the short-term the Government has also announced a £255m fund to help local authorities develop plans to tackle emissions from dirty vehicles, as part of what it says is a £3bn package of spending on air quality.

Reports & Studies

Reports from National Grid and Ofgem highlight need to adapt to changes in electric demand and supply

A new report from National Grid says that the wide scale introduction of electric vehicles presents significant challenges as well as opportunities for the UK's powergrid. Meanwhile a separate report from Ofgem says that the arrival of more low carbon, distributed generation will encourage the adoption of emerging battery and other storage technologies for which costs are falling rapidly.

Reports highlight importance of tackling truck emissions to meet carbon targets

A new report from the International Energy Agency says that improving the efficiency of road freight transport is critical to reducing the growth in oil demand, carbon emissions and air pollution over the next decades. Meanwhile, a new report from the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) assesses various fuel saving technologies for trucks.

RAE report says biofuels have a role to play in future UK energy mix

A new report from the Royal Academy of Engineering says that biofuels have a role to play in meeting the UK's climate commitments, especially those made from wastes and residues. The Academy warns, however, that while such fuels can be sustainable and make a real positive impact, this has not always been the case so far and that action is needed to manage the risks involved, improve traceability and avoid fraudulent practice.

New report: EV battery production footprint revealed

A new report finds that the production of lithium-ion batteries for light electric vehicles releases on average 150-200kg of carbon dioxide equivalents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery. An electric car with a 100kWh battery has thus emitted 15-20 tons of carbon dioxide even before the vehicle ignition is turned on. This calculation assumes a 50-70 per cent fossil share in the electricity mix.
